Longroll, this is good stuff, and maybe these facts can make it into Rob Cook's next Rogers Book edition.
In the "Rogers Shells" area, page 117 & 118, he states that clear lacquer started with the XP8s, but trunk paint was used for special orders of shells to match older Big R drums.
Jack corroborates your observation that some 5 ply shells used clear lacquer on the inside, and it only makes sense that it would be on the natural finish drums.
The book also refers to 1984 as being the last of the American built drums. John Cermenaro was the last employee strictly on Rogers payroll, and he ran the production line until it was more or less depleted, and quit in 1984. In summer of 1984, a for sale sign was put out in front of the factory, and William Schultz of CBS sold Rogers to himself in March of 1985. Parts and equipment were sold off, and in the late 80s, the Island Music phase began.

Re: Big R 5 Ply & XP8 Interior Finishes
Hi tommy yes they definately didnt have rings, if you recon they might heve been Xp8s, the thing that would say they wernt was that they had serial nos, and the grey inside was a smooth grey not speckled like mine are now, I know bruce has said before they you cant really go by the Big R serial nos because they are a bit inconsistant, XPs dont have serial nos do they, I wish I had some better pictures of them and written the serial nos down Doh!!....K
PS Tommy have you seen drumgrrl auction post are these XP8s with serial nos? no grey finish inside the drums and one drum dosent have a serial No. and the serial Nos are D9---- as i can see......K

Re: Big R 5 Ply & XP8 Interior Finishes
Kev, the serial numbered Big R tags were used until they were gone. The actual S/Ns repeated themselves as they were reordered, so at some point in time, the company just eliminated them. My XP8 kit is from 1980, and there are no serial numbers. There may have been some S/Ns on early XP8s -- I don't know.
I don't believe that the company sold 5 ply shells without the reinforcement rings, so you probably have an XP8 that was painted to match the rest of the set. Jack says that the XP8s are thinner than the 5 ply, but it seems to me that the re-rings on the 5 ply just make them look thicker than an XP8 at the top and bottom. Can you compare the two?
I checked out Drumgrrl's auction post and left a message there.

Re: Big R 5 Ply & XP8 Interior Finishes
They used the no serial number badges when they ran out of one's with serial numbers. They ordered new badges (the same serial number sequence, but nun the less new badges) when these arrive they started using them and the non-serial number badges went in a box until they were needed again.
They did this same kind of thing in the 60s, when they had rolls of no-model name badges. The badges had serial numbers, but no model name. So, when they ran out of "Holiday" model name badges, for example, they took a non-model name badge and typed/wrote in "Holiday". Or, they used another model name badge, felt tip out the model name and typed/wrote in the model name.
They just made drums, and got them out the door. Nobody cared about numbers!!!

Re: Big R 5 Ply & XP8 Interior Finishes
Longroll, I hear you. Didn't they stop using serial numbers altogether at some final date? Except on the Dynas, maybe? Anybody have any info on this?
Longroll, do you know the number sequence that was used over and over?

Re: Big R 5 Ply & XP8 Interior Finishes
I know there was a period when they ran out and used no-serial badges and then started again when the new serial number badges arrived.
I don't know how many times they did this, but I do know there are drums without serial numbers sort of mixed in, in batches.
It's hard to tell dates on XP8s, but as time went on the hardware got cheaper with less detail. The wing nuts lost the knurling and became smooth. I think the screws/washers used to hold on the lugs were black anodized near the end of XP8s.
I must admit that my focus has been more in the 60s than the 70s, but I'm catching up.

Re: Big R 5 Ply & XP8 Interior Finishes
Would anyone have a photo of the reinforcing rings you're talking about? If they have rings, they're XP5s, right?

It's no secret that I'm fascinated by the dearth of information on the demise of Rogers and the XP8/XP10 series. This seems like uncharted territory, which is very cool. The shear beauty of these drums in the flesh is something to behold.
I am very interested if anyone knows what the repeating serial number range was on these drums. The recent XP10 Dyna snare addition to my kit does have a serial number, but the rest of the kit does not. My hunch is that they serial numbered the snares out of pride, but that's sheer conjecture on my part. I'd like to see if that S/N is in a different range from other XP8 drums.
The wing nuts on the Memriloc outer clasps on all stands on my kit are smooth, and appear to be cadmium plated, as they have lost their sheen and I haven't bothered to shine them (horrors!). I see no knurling on any wing nuts. The kit is from 1980, which is early in the series.
I appreciate your thoughts and analysis.

Re: Big R 5 Ply & XP8 Interior Finishes
I think both versions look beautiful.
I liked that color when it was new.
