First Post! Question about converting shells...

Hello! I have a 6 piece XP8 kit (12, 13, 16, 18, 22, 14 Super 10) that I bought new in 1982. After these sat for the last 25 years, I decided to get back into drumming. I replaced all the heads and am back at it! When I bought them, they were mix and match colors that I got cheap from Guitar Center when they were clearing them out. The toms are the deep ones (12x12 etc). Now that I no longer want to be Neil Peart and want to be more like Ralph Peterson in the stuff I play, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to cut the long power toms down to a more traditional size like 12x8. I plan to keep these forever, but would like to have toms sit a bit lower and flatter now, and get the benefits of the sound and tunablility of the smaller drums. I'm talking specifically about the 12 and 13" rack toms. Thoughts?

Have also thought about unwrapping and finishing in natural maple.

I would not cut the drums down. However, stripping the wrap off, sanding and lacquering the natural maple finish is a great idea. This was a true and valid finish offered by Rogers in the era, and if done correctly will enhance the value of your complete setup.

Thanks for the feedback! I think I will do that! I may just try to find a standard sized 12" XP8 tom as well...

You can usually find basket case toms on ebay. Even a concert tom can be converted easily. Have done that myself. Sounds like a good project.

Connect with the FaceBook Rogers Group 2 page. For selling and buying Rogers. A pair of 12-13 concert shells, not XP8, currently for $100.

I found a mint set of blue mist XP8 toms 12x12 ans 13x12 on Reverb and picked them up for $175 for the pair. I'll keep the deep toms in case hair rock comes back into style. The new toms just sing. Really nice. So now I have 2 blue mist toms and a white BD and 16x16 FT. I have a white 18x16 FT as well but not using it for now.I might yank the wraps off and go with the natural maple, but happy for now. Thanks for the feedback!
