Hi there and XP10 pics
As mentioned in an earlier post, I don't have a huge amount of info about what I now know is a 5" XP10 Dyansonic.
In 1995 I was 17, been playing for a few years and was ready to get myself a 'proper' kit to replace the no-name I'd had up to that point. I saw an ad for a Ludwig 6-piece and went to check it out: a 2-up 2-down in natural maple. The guy selling it didn't have any info, and the tom skins were 'tensioned' by using the internal dampers(!), but for me it was love at first sight. I bought the set - including some hardware and whatnot - for £260 (about $350), and don't remember how long it was before I even realised the snare wasn't also Ludwig; I'd certainly never heard of Rogers, anyway. The snare came with the Dynasonic frame attached, but I removed it as some of the wires were shot and modern snares just wouldn't fit (don't worry - I kept the frame!). I don't remember if the wires I removed were original, but I also now know it's missing the Tension Screw Assembly, so they probably weren't. I deeply regret not asking about previous owners, how he'd come by these drums, etc but in my teenaged-new-drums excitement I just plain forgot - I got the impression he'd inherited them anyway.
At some point in the late 90s I was authoritatively informed the Ludwigs were 'early 70s' due to their olive/blue badge, and that the Rogers was 'decent'. Only one of these statements is true, and I think you can guess which!
Come the dawn of the internet, I did some perfunctory research, but didn't find any specifics because resources such as ROF and the Vintage Drum Forum didn't really exist, so I left it and carried on under the impression of 'early 70s, Rogers = decent'.
A few years back I picked up a 4-piece Premier (mahogany shells in silver wrap, with a Premier 2000 COA snare), which I know is early 70's as the guy who sold it to me bought it new, a fact I've since verified via the serial numbers, finish and construction.
More recently, I figured a second go at researching the Ludwig/Rogers was worth a try, and I'm so grateful for how much information is now available!! Info on 80s Ludwigs is still somewhat sparse but they are (I reckon) 'Phasers' from 1981-82, based on the serial nubers and a catalog I found from that time at Vintage Drum Forum. The XP10 serial number is RD980532 which (thanks to Jack's excellent Big R guide) puts it in the same timeframe, so I'm guessing they were bought together as a set, particlarly as the finishes are so similar.
ROF was the only place I found any real detail about the XP10, particularly when it came to figuring that's what I actually had. I can't thank you enough for the hard work you guys must put into this place - it's frankly amazing! I was intitially only after an idea of how old the drum was, but to find all this history, advice and enthusiasm is amazing. Thank you so much!
I've now got a Puresound Dynasonic snare and have a Tension Screw Assembly on order from Al Drew's Music (discovered thanks again to ROF!), so I'll soon have the snare set up as it should be. I recently started using Aquarian Modern Vintage heads (with a hazy 300 on the reso) and am really pleased with the results.
Anyway, 20 years later and the Ludwig isn't gigged so much, but remains in situ as my practice kit, the Premier is the packed-up ready-to-gig set. The XP10, however, is always my go-to snare as it's just so versatile - I generally play a mix of Rock and Blues with odd dalliances into somewhat heavier territory and I've never found it wanting, which I'm sure will get even better once the Dynasonic is fully reinstalled!
Great to meet you all, and thanks again - this place is fantastic!

Re: Hi there and XP10 pics
Hello and welcome.
I have RD 980574 also a 5x14. I know how rare these drums are...it took me forever to find this one.
They do play nice.

Re: Hi there and XP10 pics
Thanks guys!
I do feel a slight twinge of guilt for the fact this just fell into my lap one day. That said, I've cherished and played it for 20 years based purely on how much it suits me, so any guilt is only fleeting
I'll post some more pics once the TSA arrives from Al Drew's

Re: Hi there and XP10 pics
Don't feel guilty. You have one of the best snare drums ever made. Very rare in that size, much rarer than the 60s edition. Value to you is priceless. For insurance purposes you should do it at least 1500-2000 USD. It is worth the minute investment of insuring that specifically. You might never find another.

Re: Hi there and XP10 pics
Would be my intention. They keep selling me the wrong lottery ticket.

Re: Hi there and XP10 pics
Thanks Ploughman - that's some great advice.
I had no idea the value was quite that much. I've no intention of selling (tho if I did, ROF would be my first port of call), but I'll certainly beef up the insurance!!

Re: Hi there and XP10 pics
Awesome, forcer, thanks for sharing.
I'm also the appreciative owner of both a 5" XP10 Dyna and 5" XP10 Superten. I feel privileged to be their caretaker.
