XP-10 question...

I'm pretty sure that some of my fellow Rogers addicts have seen the 14x8 XP-10 snare that is for sale on Ebay... Black felts, flat top snare hoop (I can't tell about the batter hoop) with serial number D114630. Can anyone tell me if this drum is legit? What year it was made? John P., T.K. or any of our other Gurus? Was it built as a Dyna or a Super Ten? I really want this drum, but I need some input from people more in the know than I am. Thanks in advance, Guys... Cheers, Scott

Shell is the same on the XP-10 and the Dyna. Bottom hardware for the snares is really only difference. Felts were used, both black and green, but not sure what years that changed. I believe '81 first year for them, until demise of Rogers in '83.

Check out the Catalog section here for more details.

Re: XP-10 question...

The Dyna also had the brass thumbwheel luglocks.

Early XP10 Supertens had no felts. They went to black felts when black was introduced after green in 1982 or 83.

Early XP10 Dynas had green felts, then went to black.

Bottom line, with a COB Dyna or steel Superten as donor, you can make an XP10 Superten into a Dyna, and an XP10 Dyna into a Superten. The luglocks are available NOS from Al Drew Music in Rhode Island. The felts might have to be hand made.

Note that I'm not advocating this; I'm simply saying that the shells are interchangeable.

Thanks T.K. Does the serial number that I posted above mean anything to you? '82 or '83 maybe? Would any of you guys have a minute to click on Ebay and have a look at it for me, or are some of you lusting after it like I am? I'm pretty sure that it's a Super 10 based on what I've read in The Rogers Book and on this awesome forum. Thanks again, guys... Cheers, Scott

That is a Superten. I believe that has been up there for a few weeks. I think the seller was originally seeking $599.00. The Ploughman posted a pretty thorough XP-10 guide in the dating guide section. Great info and really great pictures. Looks like that one is probably around '83.

It is just a tad bit worn. I think the price is a bit high as well, but.... these aren't falling out of trees either. If the price was a bit better, I might have given it a go. Serial is a close one to two drums I own. And there were several in this immediate serial range. I have 122346 and 347. I recorded 343 and 345 a few years ago. Couldn't get either of those.

I looked at that drum also. I thought it was over priced for what it had. The top hoop was not original. The strainer was not for the period of drum. Also the top bearing edge looked like it needed to be redone. Looking at the finish, that needed to be done as well. I thought of pulling the trigger on it. Oh well next time .
