The outer shell ply is not very thick. nondisclosed_email@example.com (amosguy)Thu, 14 May 2020 11:01:11 +0000 Re: XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46860,from=rss#post46860https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46860,from=rss#post46860Yep, that's me. I'm hoping the primer provides some kind of protection against the glue discoloring the wood...nondisclosed_email@example.com (DaveydM3)Thu, 14 May 2020 01:51:11 +0000 Re: XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46858,from=rss#post46858https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46858,from=rss#post46858I found the primer gray under a shell once as well. No idea why. Is that you also on a FB Rogers group? nondisclosed_email@example.com (amosguy)Wed, 13 May 2020 23:33:07 +0000 Re: XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46857,from=rss#post46857https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46857,from=rss#post46857Thanks for the reply! Got the cover off one with no splintering. Saved the badge so I have the option. THe glue is a soft rubber cement type stuff and the shell looks like they painted it with a gray primer under that. Grain looks good. I'll clean the glue off, sand and see how she looks. nondisclosed_email@example.com (DaveydM3)Wed, 13 May 2020 20:50:39 +0000 Re: XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46856,from=rss#post46856https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46856,from=rss#post46856Cannot view the pictures for some reason. As I recommended in your other post, you can put on real wood veneer. Any wood you want depending on the cost you want to work with. Thinner that plastic wrap, so no issued with heads fitting. nondisclosed_email@example.com (amosguy)Wed, 13 May 2020 17:17:14 +0000 Re: XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46854,from=rss#post46854https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p46854,from=rss#post46854Sorry for waking the dead here... but I just started a wrap-to-natural project and under the wrap I have this: Pic of Glue Yes it's an XP8... It's like brown rubber cement over a gray primer. Is this worth the effort? I don't want a stained look. If you think this is the brown glue that doesn't come out right, I'll just put the wrap back on. I have only removed about 6" of it so far. Thanks! It may appear to be a crapshoot, but Rogers shell quality in the XP8 period was the best in the business. They really tried to come back into the market strong, but eventually lost the gamble to excellent drums from Japan, and blunder after blunder from the execs at CBS. Chances are, you'll remove the wrap and end up with a gorgeous kit in natural maple. 8 plies of perfection, inside and out.nondisclosed_email@example.com (tommykat1)Wed, 24 Jun 2015 15:26:27 +0000 Re: XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p45343,from=rss#post45343https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p45343,from=rss#post45343Thanksnondisclosed_email@example.com (Boscoefishback)Fri, 19 Jun 2015 13:15:28 +0000 Re: XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p45337,from=rss#post45337https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p45337,from=rss#post45337Part of what the shells look like will be determined by the type of glue used. I have redid xp8 shells that just used contact cement and you could remove that and the bare shells will look new. But I have also seen where they used this brown glue that permeates into the wood grain and you cant remove it completely. It will stain the shell. Regarding the ply, some will look like a finish ply, others will have surface blemishes. The ones that I have done did not have pieced together plies You will just have to remove the wrap to see. The shells were made by Keller.nondisclosed_email@example.com (daytonxp8)Wed, 17 Jun 2015 15:15:43 +0000 XP8 recoverhttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p45336,from=rss#post45336https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p45336,from=rss#post45336If I have an XP8 kit with bad (cracked) wrap what do you think the bare shells look like? I keep seeing the shells referred to as finished both inside and out. I'd like to make the shells natural maple if possible but don't want the outer ply pieced together. Also, are the XP8 shells made by Yamaha or Keller? Thanks for the expertise. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Boscoefishback)Wed, 17 Jun 2015 13:50:27 +0000
