Cracked kick drum hoop

Has anybody got any tips for repairing a cracked kick drum hoop? The crack is on the indside of the hoop, and looks to be cracked thru about three ply's deep. Thanks. olddrummer

It's very hard to really understand where and how it is cracked without pictures. If we could see the problem, I'm sure we could help you fix it.

Picture of cracked BD hoop

Longroll. Here is a pic of the cracked hoop I mentioned in an earlier post:
Image Let me know what you think in terms of the best way to go about reparing this crack? You may not be able to see how many ply's are actually cracked, but there is only the outer ply that is not cracked! Thanks for your help! olddrummer

Longroll. Here is another pic of the crack in the hoop, but this is a view of the end grain, or edge of the hoop;
Image I tried to get a good shot of the edge of the hoop, but with my digital camera this is what it looks like. Again thank you for your help Longroll. Oldrummer

Re: Cracked kick drum hoop

You'll have to use the bass drum this hoop came off of for a form. Take some heavy plastic (10 mil. for example) and use the blue painters masking tape, the stuff that pulls off without taking the surface with it to protect the finish of the bass drum. Put a single/double (your choice) layer of plastic all around the edge of the shell and tape to hold in place.

I'd use a strip 10" wide, lay it so a few inches hag off of the outer edge of the shell and the rest just lays up over the lugs. The flat surface between the bearing edge and the lugs is what you need to clamp the hoop to while it's drying. I'd wrap the excess that hanging off of the drum around the bearing edge and tape to the inside of the shell.

Now you should be able to side the cracked hoop onto the shell without scatching the bass drum shell's finish.

You'll need some spring clamps with the protective ends, I'd use six. Get high strength gap filling woodworker PVA glue, http://www.garrettwade.com has a great glue it's their 202GF glue.

Bend the hoop inward to expose the crack without breaking that outer ply, fill the cracked joint making sure glue is all the way into the crack, put the tip of the glue bottle against the edge of the crack and squeeze it into the joint. Put a layer of plastic wrap, like saran wrap around the joint and pull tight, this will keep the glue in, place hoop over edge of bass drum, clamp with spring clamps, leave it alone for two days.

Longroll, thanks for the help. That sounds like a real solid way to fix that crack. Have you ever made a repair similar to this before? I don't know what happened to the first pic's I posted? Brainfart I guess! Thank you. olddrummer

No I haven't! It may and may not hold. I'd be sure to make it the front hoop and put the repaired area under a tee rod.

Best of luck,

Bruce
