Need ideas for tuning Dynasonic

Hi all,

Last night I reassembled the Dyna I bought recently. It now has Puresound wires on the bridge instead of the non original ones that came with it.

I used an Evan G1 batter and an Evans 300 snare side. The latter is tuned slightly higher than the batter side. The snares are tensioned lightly in the frame and just kissing the snare head, no lingering buzz, excellent snare response.

In fact too excellent. I was hoping for more of the sound of the brass shell, but I'm getting so much snare sound the character of the shell isn't heard. I'm using a 1" zero ring to take away excessive ring, which it does without deadening the drum.

When I get home tonight I'll dial up the tension a little on both heads to see what happens.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks!

I think the Dyna responds best with the original head design: a Remo coated Diplomat or something similar. Note that today's single ply Ambassadors are different than the original 2 ply Ambs in the 60s, so today's single ply Ambs and the Evans should also give a good response. I don't think a muffle ring is necessary, as the Dyna, being 10 lugs, is already pretty dry--the ringy sound you hear doesn't reach the audience.

It helps to have a Drum Dial when sharing tunings, as the definition of "tight" means different things to different people. As a general rule, two turns on the reso tensioners and 2-1/2 turns on the batter side should yield decent tuning with a coated Ambassador and Remo snareside hazy.

Use standard tuning torque rotation, 1-6-8-3-5-10-2-7-9-4 etc. Two turns above cross hatched finger tight on top, two and a half on bottom, Stop at 1 3/4 and 2 1/4, let the head set for an hour, then take it up the 1/4 on each lug. It should need virtually no adjustment from that. This is the thing I love about a Rogers snare drum.

Snares on the frame finger tight on the tension screw, make them sing. no need to over tighten. and make sure it is centered. Throw off should bring up the bridge to just kiss the bottom head.

Thanks for the replies!

I pretty much followed your suggestions. When I sat down to play last night the sound I was hearing was low and somewhat dark. I tightened both batter and snare side heads 1/4 turn maintaining the slightly higher tension on the bottom head, played then repeated. I may have the heads a little tighter than the 2+ turns, but not much.

I think I'm closed to having it dialed in. Now, I'm coming from using the Noble & Cooley so that's a very different sound. Each stroke, even lighter ones on that drum, has an impact that few other snares have. I think I was expecting something close to that from the Dyna, but it's a different beast.

It's very sensitive (as I'm sure you guys know emoticon ) and it sings, just in a different way. I'm able to hear the brass shell now with a little less snare action. Didn't need to torque the snares in the frame and they're lightly pulled against the head.

I will say that this drum is clearly different from the Island Music Steel shell Dyna I bought and returned a few years back. When I tuned that drum it felt like the shell or the lugs flexed. Very weird, and I never could get the musical tone I get from this one.
