New Dynasonic owner

Just bought this off ebay: Dyna ebay purchase

The condition seems very good with a little rust on the rims, has the original snare bridge, but non original snares that someone did a pretty good job of making them fit the bridge. The shell is round with no external dents, though when I removed the lugs I can see small dents where the screws and screw bridges contact the shell.

Took everything apart and cleaned all the lugs and inside and outside of the shell with chrome/plastic polish. The shell has minor pitting in the chrome that can't be seen except close up and in bright light.

With my somewhat limited knowledge it looks to have all original parts except the snares. It cleaned up nicely - looking forward to getting the Puresound replacement wires just ordered ($30 from Russo Music on the bay) and giving it a test drive.

Have an Evans G1 batter and 300 hazy snare side to install.

Comments? Would like feedback from more knowledgeable Rogers owners on any aspect of the drum.

Cheers,

Fred

A little Coke will take care of that very minor rust. NO STEEL WOOL, ever.

Your drum is from 1979 just before the XP8 period began.

Make sure you clean your screw threads to get out any spall that may be stuck to them.

A good find. Nice drum, most everything should clean up and shine.

Thanks John. I thought it was, but it's nice to have confirmation. If it's from '79, it's from the same year (I think) as my memriloc set. Cool!

I've wanted a Dyna for years, and even bought one from a reputable online vintage drum dealer. Had it for about a year. Thought it sounded OK, but not great. One day I did the magnet test . . . . and it stuck. Called the dealer and reported what I found. He thought it might have been a prototype.

I returned it and got something else.

Will post pics once I get it reassembled.

Do you have information on the one you sent back? Serial number, pics, anything?

Magnets will stick on a Dyna shell - but weakly - because of the chrome. Check the difference with the stick on the shell and your refrigerator!

Congrats.

No, sorry, it was 20 years ago. It was a 6 1/2 x 14 Big R.

The magnet stuck the same to the shell as to the rim. IOW strong. Tried it in a few different locations with the same result.

I think the outfit I bought it from came to the same conclusion: it was a fraud. He gave me full credit that I used toward the purchase of a 7 x 14 Noble and Cooley steam bent maple snare. Still have that one.

I just glanced at the Island Rogers Catalog, and I'm positive that my steel Dynasonic was the same as the one in there. I remember it had the Big R badge, but no serial number on it unlike the ones on my Londoner 7 set.

That catalog also lists it as having a steel shell rather than COB. So I suppose it had some legitimacy, but not a true Dynasonic IMO.

It had the 5 small beads in the center of the shell. That and the badge gave the eureka moment of recognition.

Finally got around to taking some pics today, after cleaning and while mostly disassembled:

Dynasonic pics

The Ludwigs at the end got jealous and insisted they be included emoticon
