Backing Plate for Bass Drum Leg Mounts?

What are folks' thoughts on adding a backing plate to the bass drum leg mounts? I know they were designed the way are for a reason. However, I sometimes wonder if the fact that the mounts can wiggle quite a bit because they are only held in with two screws can add some stress to the shell. Wouldn't hurt anything to make and add a plate. You guys think it would be necessary?

Re: Backing Plate for Bass Drum Leg Mounts?

I keep my front lugs on the ground. I have also added large fender washers under the fasteners securing the mounts. I set my legs so that they take up all rotational slack out of the bass drum, but do not raise the front of it off the floor.

The bass drum that originally came with my set in 1979 was broken when someone moved it with the toms in place. I did make 16 ga. stainless steel plates to reinforce the bass drum mount and played this drum for another ten years after that. Around 1999 I replaced the BD with an undamaged one.
