Newly Acquired 1976 Kit

Hi folks.

I recently found a 5-ply 1976 kit in metallic silver. 13/14/16/24 + 5" COB snare. The thing sounds really good and it's fun to play on.

I've noticed that each drum feels much lighter than the 1968 5-ply kit that I had some years ago. Am I just imagining this or has anyone else experienced this?

If the shells are indeed lighter and/or thinner, how does that affect the sound in relation to heavier/thicker shells?

Thanks,
Justin

Re: Newly Acquired 1976 Kit

I expect they should feel heavier because the drums you now have are 13 and 14 inch toms and a 24 inch bass drum, and I expect you had a 12 and 13 tom with 22 or 20 inch bass drum. Are my guesses on sizes correct?
Anyway, a 14 inch tom feels much heavier than a 12 or 13, and similarly a 13 feels heavier than a 12. I have a 76 Big R kit and a late 60's kit. Shells without hardware should weigh about the same as both are 5 ply grey speckled interior. But the 14 inch tom has 8 lugs not 6 like the 13 tom. Big difference there alone. Enjoy your Big R kit, I love my 13,14,16,22 set up.

Re: Newly Acquired 1976 Kit

Hi bhawk.

Thanks for your thoughts. I should have clarified that the '68 I once had and the new '76 are the exact same sizes.

A few years ago, I had the '68 - 13/14/16/24. Eventually I acquired an 18" script floor tom and a beat up 26" script bass drum (don't know the exact years). I remember noticing that the '68 drums had a more subtle speckle over the gray interior and the shells felt heavier and thicker. The 18 and 26 both had quite a bit more white specks in the speckle interior paint and felt thinner, yet had the same amount of plys.

Now, with the '76, it seems to me that they more closely resemble the thinner/lighter shells of the 18 and 26 but my memory could be fuzzy. They sound fantastic and I love the sizes, so none of this is a problem. I was just curious if anyone else had ever noticed a weight difference between shells from the late 60s to the early/mid 70s.

Too bad I no longer have the '68 kit nor the 18 and 26 shells to compare to. emoticon

The hardware is much lighter on the later drums.

That is one factor I never took into account. Thanks.

This.
The Beavertails with a spring inside vs the C-clips are very different in terms of weight. The older Beavertail casings are also thicker.
