So Rogerso', do you have an idea of the date for your drum?
Your drum set me off looking at the catalogues. the first mention of a COB "Powertone" seems to be in 1965, with B&B lugs and the two bead shell. The Cook Book says 1964 and early shells were steel.
There is a COB shell in the 1962 catalogue with a seven line straight shell referred to as a Holiday with B&B lugs. This is a nice correspondence with my ER COB snare which was on sale from 1961, which is similar to the Holiday. Ajax must have been trying to replicate the COB Holiday rather than the Powertone which people say.

His drum is a late 62, early 1963 Powertone, an early drum, only a few were made with Bread and Butter lugs. Serial should be well below 3000.

From what Ive researched on my own and word from others, it was somewhere around 2300 when they went to beavertails. I think the book is wrong about the steel shells.. I know some with paper lables that are COB. I dont know of any if they do exsist. I think the holidays are rare but Im not sure the rarity /vrs the powerone B&B models.. Metal snares really took off after the mid 60's vrs wooden, {a personal observation}.. As JPM stated, that date is around that time

Speaking of Powertones I just received this off of E-bay
today. It's a Fullerton # 20652 with case and a Ludwig
snare stand. $150.00 delivered.
It's a little dirty and I have only found one rub mark on
the top rim so far. It has Ludwig wires and reso head.
Does anyone know what heads the Powertone shipped with and the correct number of wires on the strainer?
Any info woud be appreciated.

20 wires for sure. Ambassador coated batter and Ambassador Hazy snare. These are totally awesome drums. One of the best kept secrets in snare drum land.

I have to giggle maniacally when another soul finds one of these and "sees the light." We are truly touched in the head about our Rogers, but I can't rave enough about the tractability of this series of drums. Either COB or wood, 5" or 6-1/2", they all sound great no matter how untuned or abused they are. They'll never let you down in a gig, and always bring a smile to your face. Everywhere I go people comment about that Powertone sound. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
Of the 15 snares I own, if I had to grab one at a moment's notice for a gig RIGHT NOW, it would be my Blue Sparkle 5" Powertone...with extra holes, no less!
