I feel everybody is entitled to their opinions without having to "prove" them. I've been on numerous forums and there is usually a thread of "The Best" drummers and the responses are usually as varied as the drummers that comment on them. Our main discussion topic in here are Rogers Drums!nondisclosed_email@example.com (mainedrummer)Sun, 04 Aug 2013 09:44:02 +0000 Re: Compare and Contrasthttps://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p42935,from=rss#post42935https://brogersownersforum.runboard.com/p42935,from=rss#post42935That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! Like I said, Buddy was a great drummer but not the greatest by any measure. If the recording of the drums was in sync with the rest of the band you would have a different opinion. I've heard Steve Gadd several times and he is one of the best, in fact most of todays top drummers have it in spades over Rich. Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Peter Erskine and Steve Gadd, just to name a few and there's a lot more. In fact go back to Buddy Rich's heyday and you have Joe Morello who had way more chops than Rich. Buddy Rich was a fantastic drummer and showman but he remains the most over rated drummer ever. IMHO! Unless abysmally bad, I'm not keen on criticizing the playing of other drummers. Everyone has a style and level of expertise that they are working on ... doing their best to improve their chops. Having said that ... Been listening to a performance of Steve Gadd that I'm not real fond of. He's playing with the Buddy Rich band. (Probably at the memorial concert for Buddy.) Sounds, to my ear, that he's just that split-second behind where he needs to be in order to lead. I get this desire to reach out and drag him along. Chutzpah on my part, I know. But I also have a video of Buddy driving his band in a rendition of, "Straight, No Chaser." The difference in style, and ability, is apparent. Buddy is driven, it seems ... but Buddy does drive. Like him or not, nobody moved a big band better than he did. Give a listen: Steve Gadd Buddy Rich Opinions are welcome. -Joenondisclosed_email@example.com (snuffyny)Mon, 22 Apr 2013 16:28:53 +0000
