My Rogers BDP kit - a work in progress

This will be a long one but I'll try not to ramble.
I started playing the drums when I was in 5th grade or so. After the obligatory student snare kit, my parents bought me a drumset that had belonged to my uncle. This thing was a pile of junk but I was in love. I thought I had a 6 pc. Rogers set. What I had was a 13 & 16 toms with a 5x14 COB Powetone. Also a Rogers Supreme hi-hat stand. The remaining drums were a mystery up until about a month ago. I was content to bash along with Zeppelin records in my bedroom. Fast forward to a few years after high school. I'm playing with some friends in his basement and actually making some money (not in music, as a machinist). It was time for the old Rogers kit to get an upgrade. I cruised off to Guitar Center in Chicago and bought a very expensive, very LOUD, very heavy kit from a well known Asian drum manufacturer. I still have it, play it all the time. Love it. I shoved the "Rogers" set in the closet and mostly forgot about it.
Here I am playing it shortly before buying the new set.

The left bass drum was from an R-360 kit I had for about a minute. Whole other story there. You can see this kit was in sorry shape. After a few years I needed space and my buddy's nephew showed a big interest in learning to play. I gave him the old set. Fast forward again to about two years ago. I ran into the young man and asked him if he still had the set. He said "yes, you want it back?" I jumped at the chance to get it back. I got everything back that I gave him, including all the sticks I donated. Well, it was missing one thing. More on that later. He played it for about a month and they just sat in the garage for about 15 years.
So I'm going to restore this thing or at least return it to a nice playable condition. I've already started and have made some great progress. I have pics and will share but I'm running out of time for this post. Stay tuned.

O.K., so all that stuff in the first post I had mentioned in my introduction but I had to start somewhere. Also, that's really the only picture I have of the drums from back in the day. The toms and bass drum all were missing their bottom heads in an attempt to make concert toms, I guess. At least I had the lugs on the 9x13. Some chucklehead painted the inside of the rack toms white. Probably to make them match as the Rogers was grey and the other was a natural finish. Just slapped on the flat white over the paper tag, screws, etc... You can't see from the photo but it does have it's reinforcing rings. So that tom is going to take the most work to get back in shape. Here's what they looked like a few months ago.

They look better in the pic than in person.
I'll admit, they are pretty rough. Of course, I'm not doing this for the value of the kit but because I've been a Rogers man since the day I got these and I really want to be able to enjoy the high quality of this great instrument.
So the first thing on the list was find a bass drum. I was floored at the prices that a 14x22 BD was going for. My first thought was buy a new Keller shell in a really big size and build one.The price of the shell and the wrap brought me down to earth. I also figured I'd never find a complete one in BDP. I bought a Fullerton shell with some hardware and planned on re-wrapping it. Then an early model Fullerton in BDP came along.

Yes, it's not the same era. I'm also on a budget and with the condition of the other pieces, I'll leave the rarer stuff to the collectors and this kit will be the home for wayward Rogers parts. Within reason, of course.
I've had these drums since 1983 and this is the first time I've had a Rogers bass drum. I was like a kid on Christmas when I first got this assembled.

I need to change the inlay and I'm a little light on hardware but I finally have the fourth piece!

The floor tom is a 16 x 16. It was in pretty good shape but the wrap has a bit of a green tint to it compared to the others. It cleaned up pretty nice considering the rust pitting on the knobbies and the hoop turning green. Like I said the bottom hoop and lugs were gone so I had to source those parts. One of the new lugs is a Fullerton and the hoop is a Gibraltar.

You can see the knobbies while I was working on them. After cleaning and polishing I put a light coat of Johnson's paste wax to keep the rust at bay. I have the original hex legs but have not polished them yet. I've a set of new aftermarket ones on there for now.
I have more pics I'll post later.
Oh, and the heads on the toms and snare are just stuff I had laying around. After everythings all done, I'll get a fresh set of heads.
I scored that nice old Zildjian A ride from a friend who wanted to trade some stuff and I found that vintage Premier stand in my stash of stuff from the old days. Out of time for now, I hope someone will enjoy my story and my old Rogers drums.

Thanks, Jack. I'm looking forward to it as well.

I got the snare playable the other night. I've never been able to get a good sound out of this snare. Until now. This poor thing was clearly abused before I got it. I'll admit to a bit of neglect but never abuse. The shell had some significant dents at the lugs and especially at the strainer. The clock face was nearly vertical. The throwoff lever was hitting the rim, etc...
Image
This doesn't show the dent but you can see the grunge. I got the dents out returned the shell to very nearly round. All of the lugs are dinged up on the rib. Also, you can see in the opening post that it had stick saver rims on it from a certain popular Chicago drum manufacturer of old. That was my mistake. In the pic you can make out how the t-rods are at a pretty severe angle. Those hoops are way too small for this shell. I had an R-360 kit for a while and those hoops were on that snare. In my infinite wisdom, I figured different was better. So I swapped my original Powertone hoops for the others. I then sold the R-360 kit along with my Swiv-O-Matic pedal and Supreme hi-hat stand. Oops.
Image
The tag has a date on it of 7-13-66 and two sets of initials.
Image
Now that I have the dents out and know a little more about how to set up a snare properly I should be able to get a great sound out of this. Once I get a proper batter head that is.

Thanks Hugh. Yeah, it's a labor of love. I don't have any place for them at the house so I might even build a room for them. More to come!

Re: My Rogers BDP kit - a work in progress

Just a little update. With the warm weather and the kids out of school I've been too busy to spend much time on the kit. I'm looking to get back to it soon. I did pick up another Dyna that my friend had sitting in his mom's basement. I'll need some advice on that but I think that's for another thread. I've got to get out to my lathe and finish up making the collets for the bass drum spurs and tom mount. Anyway, I haven't gone away just been busy.

Oh man, that's a nice looking shell. Thanks for the comments. I'm hoping to get back to working on the kit soon. I'd really like to have a matching wood snare. I'm debating on whether I replace the shell of my COB Dyna to make it the wood shell snare of my dreams.
