I've been reading an old thread between you and Powertone, nutbox. Since this is the 3rd one you've seen, i take it those were the other two?

Fascinating stuff mind!

Re: ER Dynasonic 14x5

When I say the 3rd I mean with Bread & Butter lugs. They are much more common (in the sense that you see about three on ebay each year) with Beavertail lugs. I have a B&B (mid 64) and a BT (early 67) version

For the UK market initially the Dyna was very expensive and probably only started to be produced around mid 64 just before the change over to BT lugs. For both these reasons not many would have been produced. I have only seen one that was complete and it changed hands for the second time that I have seen on ebay a year or so ago for £250. Mine has an extra hole under one of the lugs where someone has at some point used a replacement lug, and has had the top hoop swapped out.

If you have a serial number ink stamped inside I should be able to give you a date.

Things have moved on since that old conversation with Powertone. It now looks very likely that only the throw and butt came from the USA. I don't think that the original idea of 1st generation parts being shipped to the UK from the US when they became surplus holds up now. The English snare wire assembly has 20 strands as opposed to the American 19 strands. I have observed two very slightly different versions of the "Custom Built" Dyna badge which doesn't fit with the idea of 1st generation badges being shipped over. More likely they were being made as required. The hoops were sourced from within the UK and continued to be used in their tall form through to Ajax Nu-Sound and the end of production toward 1970. Given this, it would not be a hard job to cast a snare frame. B&H were sourcing collet plates and swivos, a snare frame is much cruder than those.

Wow, thanks. There's no ink stamp unfortunately, is there any other way of identifying? I'm a little worried its been modified a bit too much.

It is an English Dyna. It isn't a collector's drum but it will be a good player. Remember though that the B&B lugs can crack to don't crank it up too much. They didn't all have serial numbers.

The chance of you finding the hoops and the frame in the UK inside several years is slim. You need to be happy with it as it is and if anything turns up then it is a bonus.

Those 10 lug tall hoops - chicken's teeth!

I'm away the next few days.
