Left handed? Who?

Ok. Ive seen a few lefty kits, ....So who is left handed.

I am left handed. I did first grade in 1966 with one hand tied down.
About midway through the year, she gave up. Mrs. Brooks was about 90.
When I started playing.....my teacher was a righty, and by then, I had learned to live in a right handed world, including zipping my pants, so I play right handed. It was a righty kit. Made things hard as hell getting started. Every thing felt kind of backwards. I play guitar righty as well. I bat right handed. But, I cant even scrawl my name right handed. Looks like a ham fisted cave man. I eat, draw and write, drink, all the important things ......I do left handed.

So, Who is a lefty? And how do you play?

I am a LEFTY. I play my drums left handed. Thus making it hard to play at a club that has several bands in one night playing on one kit. I usually just switch the snare, HH, Floor tom and ride cymbal. I have always set my kit up for a left handed drummer. Since I use a double tom mount on the bass there's no need for a special kit. Now here's an interesting bit of information. I play in a church band and the other drummer in the group is also left handed playing a lefty kit. How interesting is that. It makes for a much easier rehersal session.
As for the rest of my life, I eat, throw a ball, etc left handed. However, I write right handed. I do not know why. Maybe I was brain washed by Sister Batrill.

Re: Left handed? Who?

I'm a lefty, but some where along the path of growing up I got all mixed up. I play several instruments, all right-handed, including the drums. Once I was learning to play the fiddle and realized if I changed it around and played left handed it was a lot easier, handling the bow. My son is also a lefty but he is strictly left handed. He's learning to play a left handed guitar and I've made attempts to switch to see if I could. It just doesn't work for me. The first time I ever sat down at a drum set it was a right handed kit and I've never felt uncomfortable playing it that way. It is natural for me to lead with my right hand on the drums. I also play a percussion setup and the first time I played with another percussionist I realized I had my setup a mirror image of the way his was setup, which was right handed. Go figure. Most other stuff I do with my left, except I bat right.

I remember reading somewhere once that to strenghten your "off" foot and hand to set up your drum set as a left handed, if you're right handed. I tried that once and it felt so odd I didn't try very long.

Well, to keep in sink with this post (of which I find most interesting), I'm a RIGHTY, however all my life I have always led with my left foot, going down stairs, left foot first, left shoe always goes on first, same with pant leg, left first. When I get up to start walking, my left foot always leads. I can write backwards with my left hand in cursive. I was born with a pretty severe club foot which probably is the main culprit for the leading left foot thing. I have noticed a timing oddity with the hat and the kick when I play. Seems there are just some things I'm not able to do? Interesting? emoticon olddrummer

I am like two of my favorite drummers, Ringo Starr of The Beatles & Tony Hajjar of At The Drive-In/Sparta. They are left handed drummers too but they're like me. They play right handed. So we lead with our Left on rolls & what not so it gives us a unique taste to our beats.

Ringo left handed? I never knew. Gee, I guess it's true what my wife says, that I never pay attention and can't see things in front of my face. God bless that woman!

I didn't know either, Dan. I read about it in a recent issue of Modern Drummer that Ringo was the main story for.
