Re: More Buddy Rich ...
New to me as well. Interesting that he is using matched grip. I've seen a much later video of him where he puts down matched grip totally. He was a real BS artist sometimes..

Re: More Buddy Rich ...
Waitaminit, we don't see the whole solo. He's making a point of being somewhat like a "slow slugger" in this portion. Most certainly he began the song by playing trad grip with the band, as he always did. Then, in this segment, snares are off. He's doing a drum kit tympani thing. This is only the very beginning of the solo. I'll bet that he turned the snare on later, and went back to trad grip for one of his tremendous finales.

Re: More Buddy Rich ...
If I were a bettin' man, I'd say this was a clip from an old MGM movie where he did a cameo. Note the intentional camera work which includes the couple sitting at a table and the interchange between them as they listen to Buddy drum. It reminds me a Three Stooges film shot during the Big Band era where they play 3 waiters at a new club that opens up. Same type of cmera work and set-up. Waddya think?

Re: More Buddy Rich ...
That is definitely a movie clip, and he uses matched grip very successfully, doesn't he?
I have seen that later interview clip where he is completely dismissive of matched grip and the players who use it.
Did he forget the movie scene? Or was it just another opportunity for him to bash younger players playing in a different genre? Both, I think...

Re: More Buddy Rich ...
I think this is part of a bigger solo. He's simply going for a certain style, feel and sound in this snippet. It was created way before Ringo and the beginning of the match grip era.

Re: More Buddy Rich ...
Long ago and far away ...
Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan ...
I used to frequent a jazz themed coffee house.
There was a house DJ spinning jazz LPs.
Whenever I'd enter, he'd play this tune next.
It was my favorite hang-out over there.
Love For Sale
To my mind, this is near-perfect jazz drumming.
