Luxor snares..
I plunged, bought a very nice looking Luxor. Probably paid too much, but that is far from the dumbest thing I've ever done.
I would like some education, though...
Cleveland? Dayton?
What are the shells? Edges?
Is there a difference in Cleveland v Dayton?
I guess I'm asking for a basic primer on the Luxor snare. I DID try a search...but was redirected, etc. Just had no luck..
Anyone want ti educate a newbie? Or help him with his research??
Thanks!

Re: Luxor snares..
We'd love to educate you here on the ROF. Lots of experts here. Pictures would help greatly in giving good info. Early Cleveland (pre mid 63) were different from later versions (late 63 and upward) They had flatter edges, most were 3 ply. The real gurus here will jump in I'm sure. Not much difference from late 63 Cleveland's to Dayton's. Not sure when they went to 5 ply shells.

Re: Luxor snares..
I haven't gotten it yet. The description says Cleveland, and three ply with Maple reinforcing rings.
Sounds like a fair description...
I'll send some pics. although the ebay link is http://www.ebay.com/itm/170869782180?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
I must say, I do have buyer's remorse about the price. But, like I said, I most certainly have done lots of dumber things. LOTS!
And much more serious...

Re: Luxor snares..
Drums are like any other collectable - the thing that matters to the price is the rarity; and the condition. That snare appears to be in quite good condition. And it hasn't been really detailed yet. So you might hear "you can get one of those for $250". Well you might. But it's unlikely that you will get one with good chrome and wrap for that on eBay. So you should comfort yourself with the fact that you bought a reasonably rare drum in good condition. And once you play it, you will forget about the price pretty quickly, imho.

PK.

Re: Luxor snares..
I collect Luxor snares and have 24 of them. I've gigged and recorded with them, they are great drums. Same shell as a Powertone, Tower or Dynasonic. Same lugs, 6 instead of 8 (or 10). The throwoff is the same as those other snares as well, the Luxor and Tower each with their own faceplate, but the body of the strainer is the same.
Same edges etc, and the tone control was optional. Same butt as the Tower. Available in all the Rogers finishes from the 60's.
With maple Powertones bringing $400+, a nice Luxor is a good alternative. They sound great...

Re: Luxor snares..
It would have been nice to see the inside. And it's weird to have a used batter on the snareside. However, if it's what it looks like, you didn't do badly at all.

Re: Luxor snares..
Yep, a Blue Strata and a Pink Strata. Also added a Black Strata since that photo.
By the way, all of the Luxor tags are Cleveland tags, regardless of the year. They used the same tags (must have had a box full of them) into the late 60's, at which point the model was dropped.
I have a 6.5x14 Luxor in green sparkle, speckled interior and late 60's hardware. Probably from very late Dayton or early Fullerton. I've never seen another 6.5 that I can recall, it was probably made for a school and used in the band room etc. It is a rewrap, but was originally green as evidenced by the small bit of wrap still under the grommet when I got it.
Great little drums, and a lot cheaper to collect than maple Dynasonics!

Re: Luxor snares..
D,
Cool. I have the jones for one. I love the dynasonic but would like to augment it with wood. Awesome collection. Made me grin out loud.

Re: Luxor snares..
GOAL! Just picked up a blue strata Luxor (Cleveland) that is very clean. SO happy. Now, to find that tom...
Couldn't seem to find a blue strata dynasonic or powertone for sale.
