My XP-8 "rescue" kit

I recently purchased an XP-8 kit off of CL.

Image

A decent black wrap kit, right?
Not exactly. They're not wrapped - they're painted (badly I might add). The previous owner saw something through the bad paint job that made him wonder, so he took some sandpaper to the bottom (fortunately) of the BD.

Image

Beneath the paint is tobacco sunburst lacquer!!

Now, the hard part. How to get to it without ruining it. I consulted with a friend who is a custom furniture maker. He suggested denatured alcohol as safest, so we tried a test. Here's the result:

Image

I spent 3 hours working on the BD with the alcohol and it came off about 90% of the drum. Where the hardware was and where the hoops covered the shell, it did not want to come off at all.

Worse yet, the alcohol had no effect at all on the 12" tom. I quickly became worried that it was a different kind of paint that wouldn't be touched by the alcohol. Also, the 12 showed signs of red overspray on the inside of the shell. Now I was worried that it wasn't a TSB shell, and maybe they tried to do a DIY burst and when that failed, painted everything black.

So....back to my buddy's for another test. This time we stepped it up a notch to lacquer thinner. Fearing it might eat through the original finish as well we tried it first under the mount on the 12. It didn't seem to be softening the original finish, so we we went a little bigger.

Image

There were 2 coats of paint - a brick red under the black. A little more thinner and some wiping and...

Image

The original finish is under there and intact! The thinner did not seem to soften it at all, and it shines! It's going to be a time consuming process to get it all off, and then get the overspray off the inside of the shells, but I'm pretty optimistic about the results.

The hardware is in very good condition, no rust or pitting, just a little oxidation on the mounting screws. There are extra holes on the front side of the BD where someone fit non-Rogers lugs, but they are covered by the Rogers lugs, so no problem. I need a front hoop and maybe a few more claws, but otherwise it's complete.

What do you guys think?

Great find!!!. Just be careful of the lacquer that Rogers used. It gets brittle over time. Every xp8 drum that I have seen with the original lacquer finish had cracks in it. Like alot of cracks. I had a red wine tom that had so many cracks , I just stripped it off and repainted. I am not saying this will happen, who knows what the paint and the lacquer thinner might do to these drums. Hopefully nothing.
Great kit.

73Rogers: way cool. Kudo's on the resto so far. My guess is that the 1 or 2 coats of paint actually protected the laquer finish on the TSB and you'll find few cracks. Kinda like deep layers of mud protected dinosaur bones! The TSB looks vivid next to the black paint. Can't wait to see the results of your meticululous labor.
Peace,
Hugh

Re: My XP-8 "rescue" kit

Thanks guys.
My "expert" was very impressed by the original finish. He said it must be a "post-cat" lacquer, to have hardened that strong and not be affected by the thinner.
If you look at the last pic, you can see they drilled the holes right over the seam in the outside ply, and at the top mounting hole, there's a chip down to the wood. We figured if there was anywhere the thinner was going to attack the finish it would be there.
The more I look at it, the more I think the red might even be some sort of primer, because the black on the toms appears glossier than on the BD and FT.

Here's the BD after 3 hrs with the alcohol. You can see where it doesn't want to come off.

OMG! What a find! Some of us here are tobacco sunburst nuts, and your story really hits home. Great find 73Rogers, and thanks so much for posting the pics. this is what we live for here on the ROF!

I'm extremely surprised that the lacquer thinner didn't affect the original sunburst. In my experience, lacquer thinner mars hardened lacquer very easily. I've obviously never touched my TSBs with it, so this makes me wonder what the Rogers painters really used when painting these drums...

Probably the best, plus it was painted on fresh wood so might be less affected . . .

For whatever reason this is one fine rescue.

Re: My XP-8 "rescue" kit

Spent a couple hours in the driveway this morning with the 12.
Before:

After:

As you can see, a couple of chips and some spots where the hardware pulled the finish off, but no cracks.
I put a LOT of lacquer thinner on this drum and the finish is none the worse for it. I was worried it might lift the badge or take the ink off, but no problems there either.

This is what came off it:

73Rogers: continued congrats on the resto. Between you and RimsnSkins on the Photographs post, I think I'll hunt down a cheap black kit and see what's underneath! Lol!
