Silver coating inside of shells... how important?

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum after purchasing my first Rogers kit. emoticon

I've noticed that some kits have what appears to be a silver coating inside the shells. From what I've read, this was done to enhance the tone? I've just noticed that the kit I purchased doesn't have this... should I be concerned? Does this mean its a low-quality Rogers?

From what I can gather, its an english Rogers (Boosey & Hawkes made shells).

Don't get me wrong, it sounds amazing and that's the important thing but can't help but feel I've missed out on the real deal if this is the case with the coating...

any re-assurance would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the ROF emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon Glad to have you with us.
I'm sure NutBox and some of the other blokes from across the pond will jump in with all the info you could ever use on ER drums.
I've heard this "interior paint helps with sound" theory before and I believe it's all bunk. I think the interior paint helped protect the wood and make it look nice. I don't believe there were any lower quality Rogers drums prior to the advent of the imports.
We love pictures here and they help with identification. Again, welcome!

Hi Fastestman, welcome to the ROF. The English Rogers drums didn't have a coating .......... well not quite true the shells usually have a thin coat of varnish (probably one coat) .... actually some of the very early ones have a good thick coat of varnish. The most come finish inside is just a thin varnish to the point that you can still feel the roughness of the wood.

As you say they sound great so your aren't missing anything.

It is the US ones that have the grey paint inside. I think it is generally accepted that it was just a finishing off sort of thing with no intentional acoustic properties. However people read things into stuff were nothing was intended. If there was an acoustic property to the paint then Rogers would have mentioned it in their promotional bumf, and they didn't.

So, show us what you got. emoticon

thanks guys. I'm feeling much better about my purchase. emoticon

So I played them for the first time with my band last night and they sound great. Really open and warm, but still punchy. Very happy.

I'll take some photos later today and post them up.

On the US drums it's flat grey paint in there. I've heard that it was a marine-grade paint. It probably contains lead, so a person needs to be careful of any sanding dust.
It was there for a finished appearance and some protection.
I use flat grey primer in a spray can to repaint the interior of a drum where the original finish is far gone.
