Re: Show Us Your Sets (NEW)

Tommy, that's a 1987 10-Meter (33') Trojan Yacht. I bought it in 1994, sold it in 1998. Used it for 4 seasons, then got out of boating altogether. My first boat was a 21' Sea Ray in 1986, then a 23' , a 26' , a 32' Wellcraft Express and then the Trojan. Once I got into it I wanted to travel further and further and I kept seeking a bigger boat. The Trojan weighed 10 tons w/fuel etc. Twin 454 Crusader big blocks rated at 350hp each, Onan 6.5 genset, full galley, head w/shower, private stateroom and guest accomodations etc etc. It would easily cruise at 22 knots and top out near 30 knots. Fuel mileage? .7 miles per gallon. 240 gal tank meant a safe range of 140-150 miles with a 40 gallon reserve. 70 gal fresh water tank, holding tank for the head, built in tv in the salon, full range of electronics on the bridge. It was the ultimate toy.

I sold it before I went broke trying to buy the 37 footer I wanted.

I had bought the Trojan as a bank repo, almost unused and in covered storage for a few years and at a very good price. It had originally listed at $125,000 in 1987 and I got it for a lot less. When I sold it, I actually got $1000 over what I paid for it. Of course, I had done some upgrades to a few things over the years, but that was the only money I spent for 4 years of great trips.
This photo was taken by friends of ours from their boat, about 6-7 miles offshore. We were on the way to Ocean City Maryland from the central NJ Shore. A trip of about 150 miles that took us past Atlantic City and Cape May NJ.

I know you're a gearhead, that's why I gave some specs...

Hey John P-
I saw that you were bowing out of the drumchat site. Sorry to see you go. You have a lot of drum info to share....
The bottom edges of my concert toms are the weak link in construction. Love the toms but I do have to be careful with the thin wrap on each bottom. So far, everything has stayed put since I got them Christmas 1980 emoticon

Love it, Dan! Surprised it didn't have Cat diesels, or is that only in the bigger boats...?

Re: Show Us Your Sets (NEW)

I think a pair of small diesels like Volvo were an option, but I have never seen one like that. The extra cost would put the price at a ridiculous level for a 33' boat.
I don't think there are many 11 Meters (37') out there with diesels either, maybe a few.
When you get to the 12 Meter model (40') I believe they only came with diesels, Cats or maybe Detroits. A new 12 Meter in the late 80's was well over 300k.

My boat had a 13' foot beam, that's wider than average for a boat that size and gave a lot of room inside and a very stable platform.

The 12 Meter had almost a 15' beam = a huge boat.
there was a 13 Meter and a 14 Meter as well. Gigantic boats.

Trojans were never considered to be serious offshore tournament-style fishing boats: they were set up for luxurious cruising and part-time liveaboard use. They were, however, built like a tank and used top quality materials and design. One of the top brands at the time, they started as a small company in Pa in the 50's and grew quickly because of the quality, while migrating thru the various techological advances and winding up as one of the premier brands before winding down in the 90's. In a similar story to Rogers, their patented hull design was 'borrowed' by other makes who are still around. Just like Rogers. The recession in the 90's hurt them badly and since they had no entry-level models, the smallest being my boat, they couldn't hang on. In addition, the company had been sold and the new management didn't do a good job. Again, just like Rogers. Spooky, eh?
