The Big R period, a dating guide for drums and snares
Now.... this has taken several years, even before Bruce passed away, to make these determinations concerning the Big R period. Many people have contributed to these findings, Tommy, Dan, Bruce, and a host of others, as well as drum observations from EBay, pics I robbed off the internet from many un-named, and for the most part, unknown sources, drums I own, drums I have physically seen, and well, I cannot even begin to exhaust the list, or even begin to thank all of those to whom thanks is owed.

Re: The Big R period, a dating guide for drums and snares
Bravo, John! This is a fabulous thread, and very necessary.
Couple of things I might offer:
>> My 1980 XP8s have the "wide flat top" hoops you describe.
>> I have what was sold to me as a 6.5 wood Superten, SN D109337 (you have this in your database). It arrived with many incorrect parts from other eras, including throwoff from the 70s, replacement tensioners, missing damper, Taiwanese snare wires, etc. It also has green felts. I have concluded that this probably was a Dyna at one time that was stripped, rebuilt and resold as a Superten.

Re: The Big R period, a dating guide for drums and snares
The NIB vintage 1976 Rogers Big R set and dynasonic snare drum on ebay this week are all five digit, five ply drums with the COB Dynasonic, five digit no dampener. I think at this point, with all the snares I have looked at in the last 4-5 months, without any doubts, I can say, Rogers first true Big R Dynasonics were ordered without the dampener. What I cannot determine is whether this was a mistake or whether it was the intention to permanently remover the dampener at this time to save cost. That the dampener returned after only a few hundred shells lends to support mistake. Or it could mean, sales on the dyna dropped or there were complaints from end users. I think its just a matter for speculation, because I do not believe it is possible to positively prove any of those three theories.

Re: The Big R period, a dating guide for drums and snares
When the Big R drums came along, the internal tone controls on toms were gone. I suspect they eliminated it from the snare to be consistent, expecting the player to use one of the clip-on tone controls if desired.
I'm sure this plan backfired, since the external t/c on the snare would definitely get in the way when playing and also didn't work as well.
I'd bet there were complaints from buyers and dealers and that led to the return of the internal t/c's on the snares.
A possible explanation...

Re: The Big R period, a dating guide for drums and snares
I will be posting an updated version of the Big R period guide, ....... soon. Like within the week.
Ive been reviewing a good sized inventory of drum pics, and can clear up a couple of the "not so sure abouts."
1979 Five Ply drums ranged into the upper 958xxx, possibly higher. Some Drums in this range have solid gray interiors, except for the lacquers.
1979 Introduction issue XP8 drums started in the low D96xxxx range.

Ploughman, good on ya, well done!
Dang...this looks exhausting. You've done a ton of research, and I'll be referring back to your great work often.
Thank You!
