Just bought some Big Rs
Hey guys, I'm brand new to this forum and JUST purchased a set of Rogers a few days ago through eBay. I've done my research and read through a lot of the posts on this forum and tried to really familiarize myself with the company, however, I'd still appreciate it if some of you awesome dudes could take a look at my set and tell me what you think!
As far as I can tell, these were most likely Fullerton-made Big Rs (KOA wrap). The description says they have a grey-speckled interior with reinforcement rings. I've read that Fullerton-made kits weren't as high in quality as earlier kits and XP8s, but these are in great shape, plus I go to school in Fullerton, CA which I think is pretty cool!
I bought the set for $400. Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Just bought some Big Rs
Nice job! That's a great set of drums and a great price to boot. Make no mistake: these are excellent drums. They are better than anything else produced at the time. If you get a chance, look inside of any brand x drum of the same era, and also the hardware. It won't match up to the quality, strength and sound of Rogers.

Re: Just bought some Big Rs
That's definitely great news! I'm new to vintage drums and I really wanted an older set and this seemed like the perfect set for the price.
I also have a few more questions:
Where can I get a rubber stop for the left bass drum spur? And for clean up, I have some Trick drum polish that has worked wonderfully on my tama starclassic. Do you think it is okay to use on this set with the wrap and all? Thanks again!

Re: Just bought some Big Rs
The rubber tips on the spurs are just 1" crutch tips you can get at the hardware store.
That polish will work fine on these drums. The Koa finish is a Formica-type wrap, it's very durable.
By the way, after Rogers moved to Fullerton in 1969, all of the drums came from there until the company collapsed in the mid-80's.
I've got a set of Koa drums in the collection. They're from 1970 and have the Swivomatic hardware.
The big R/memriloc drums like yours started in 1975 and continued with the grey interiors until 1979. At that point, the XP8 series came along....

Re: Just bought some Big Rs
Hey guys, just got the drums in the mail today. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of shipping damage to the bass drum. There is a crack all the way down on the side opposite of the tom mount. The hoops are bent and the heads are damaged as well. How should I go about fixing this?

Re: Just bought some Big Rs
Were they insured? Start by filing a claim with the shipper, and contact your seller.

Re: Just bought some Big Rs
I think the shipper has to file the claim. Be sure to save all shipping packing. Did you see any damage to the box before you opened it? Take any pictures of the unopened box? How about the driver/counter clerk when they were delivered/pick up?
Good luck with the claim.
