Big R 5-ply shell construction.

Are the mid to late 70s, grey interior, 5-ply w/rings shells also Keller New England Hardrock maple plys, as the XP-8s were?

I believe these were maple/poplar/maple/poplar/maple. There may have been another wood type in lieu of the poplar.

Re: Big R 5-ply shell construction.

Thanks fellers!
That makes perfect sense. I kept searching and found the catalogs only mentioned "hardwood" construction. They don't sound nearly as sharp and attack like my XP-8s, but softer, similar to 3-ply Luds and Slingys.

I do feel these suffer from less than perfect bearing edges, I have yet to put these on the granite table top to check, but new edges seem to be a culprit in my dialing these in as easily as the XP-8s.

The band likes them because they are a little more quiet than my usual road drums. I have been playing the Dyna vs. my 6.5x14" Maple Pearl, so the snare has been more cutting. Hahaha, they can't have it all!
