posticon Sta-Tight legs holder on 14" floor tom

Hi,

I've just bought a Holiday Dayton kit with a ( emoticon ) 14" floor tom. Up to now I've always seen and used knobby style leg holders, but this one has what they call "sta tight" ones. The label shows a 62xxx serial, meaning 1966 dayton era, when the knobbies were already selling...
So the question is: why???
And do they tighten as well as the knobbies? Should I drill two more holes to place knobbies (ok that's a crime)? Are they more valuable?

Cheers,

Because you could save like five bucks back then. And since gas was about 23 cents a gallon, five bucks went a long way.

That's very valuable drum, I wouldn't change a thing. If you do the value goes right out the window. The knobby's with angled hex legs were more stable (less prone to move around when playing) so ultimately Rogers used the the new device.
Very nice drum! Leave it be.

Also, be careful not to overtighten the legs on this drum. There are very few threads on the sta-tite and if you do overtighten you'll strip them.

roachroach, as the others say, leave it as is. Very awesome drum! You're a lucky man.

Figure the height you want and put some memri type locks on the bottom of the legs to save overtightening and stripping the mounts. Looks great.

Great idea Amos! There is a section on "collars" with a set screw and this would work great on this drum. I'll see if I can find it and put the link in here.

Here's the link for setscrew collars. Note that they come with an Allen screw. However, this swaps out with a Rogers screw. Also, DW makes screws that are fine replacements, sold in packs of 4 (or 6?).

I don't think it hurts the look and feel of the Swivo era at all.

(Note: this is not a floor time leg, it's a cocktail arm, with the snare above it. On a FT leg, the collar would be underneath the knobby.)

My blue sparkle 14 came with sta-tights that didnt. The guy I bought it from got it from god knows where and just did not take care of it at all. One of the Sta-tight mounting screws had fallen out, and he didnt bother to replace it, so needless to say there was some damage to the wrap, as well as the hole being wallowed out a bit. Out of asthetic necessity, and to make the drum truly functional, I changed my mounts to Swivos. I dont regret that a bit.
