Clockface Clamping Plate
Cleveland Snare drums with the Clockface throw off are often plagued by the loss of or damage to the clamping plate. I have three such drums, and a spare clockface throwoff that all suffer from this problem.
So, Today, using the one clockface clamping plate that I do have as a model, fabricated two plates using the following proceedure.
First I purchased a piece of aluminum bar stock 1/8" x 1/2", a set of needle files, an 8/32 tap, and a mini hack saw.
I cut my bar stock to the correct length, and carefully made marks on the stock for the grooves that align with the ridges on the backside of the clockface throwoff. I set my stock in a clamp and used the needle files to cut the grooves, checking each time to insure proper alignment with the backside of the throwoff. After all the grooves were cut, I then clamped the plate to the throwoff and used a proper sized drill bit to drill out one mounting hole. Once that was drilled, tapped and the screw installed, I drilled the second hole and repeated that proceedure.
Understand this is a first effort, and I do not know how well the aluminum will perform under use, but the 8/32 screws tightened up very well and the strings do not slip.

Re: Clockface Clamping Plate
Ploughman, brilliant work. A job well done.
Use 000 steel wool or jewelers rouge (preferably) followed by Blue Magic and the aluminum will shine like chrome.

Re: Clockface Clamping Plate
Sorry it took a bit to get back- and now it appears I've jumped categories- Oh well-
Thanks guys for the advisory- John your blueprint for creating the plate is very helpful.
Ok- while I've got your learned attention- here's the other problem with the clockface internally. I'll call it the pivot washer and screw- coming apart from the lever. It was like this when I got it and luckily the shaft and washer were trapped inside the housing, barely.
It looks like the shaft was threaded and then the top hole(on the lever)tapped in some way on the backside to lock the threads in place. It's now too short to lock it in permanently. When it's in- great smooth action. Lovely design.
Seen this one? And sorry for the untechnical terminology. I'm learning.

Re: Clockface Clamping Plate
I always thought that was a 'press' fit. In any event, I don't think it can be fixed, you're going to need a new lever.

Re: Clockface Clamping Plate
Sorry to hijack this post, but when i first read Dan1C's reply, I thought he wrote, 'you're going to need a new lawyer'. I'm wondering, why a new lawyer, whose's he gonna sue. Then it hit me.

Re: Clockface Clamping Plate
Thanks for the response Dan1c-
Now, any idea where I might find a new lever with the washer built in, I assume? And while we're at it, still looking for a snare bridge and wires for the drum.
And a lawyer probably, danny55- I really am thinking of suing all of you for drummerfication of character.

Re: Clockface Clamping Plate
Spare levers for those throwoffs are more scarce then hen's teeth. Sometimes you can find an incomplete strainer being sold for parts and get a lever from that. new ones do not exist.
Or, you could send it to me and I'll try to fix it for you.

Re: Clockface Clamping Plate
Well, that's mighty neighborly of you Dan1c- you know, when I got the xp8 kit it came with an eighties era Yamaha HH- but with this clutch- the top swivel is kind of frozen up there- can you use it? I'll trade you for the effort. Do you need the whole throwoff?Email me with your info-
And thanks-
