New front kick drum head

Got a tear in the front head of my ER 22" kick recently, sourced a guy in US who sold me a vinyl rogers logo sticker (us style).

Now all I need is a new front head. Here's my questions:

What head is the correct one for it? I don't particularly want an original English one as I've heard they were crap (everplay?). So i'm guessing i'll go for the correct us spec head. (At moment it's got a torn weatherking ambassador batter on)

also , should i cut a miking hole into the new one, or leave it untouched? will this create miking problems live?

i'm sure somebody will help

Hi FunkyDrumma, I don't know about "correct" but here is what Eddie Ryan who was one of the guys who made your kit had to say about head choice in a conversation with Sivomatic. He (Eddie) recommends putting a coated Remo Ambassador on the batter head and a Remo Ambassador clear on the snare head. In the past I have mostly fitted an Ambassador on the top and a Diplomat on the bottom as this is basically what was fitted when the drum was new. Eddie however, feels that putting a thinner head on the bottom loses some tone & "beef" from the drum. Incidentally his choice for the toms is a Clear Pinstripe on the batter head and an Ambassador coated on the resonant head.

He doesn't mention bass drum heads but I suppose a Remo coated Ambassador would be a good basic choice, but there are so many possibilities these days. You can take the Remo logo off if you want to with a clean cloth and acetone (nail varnish remover) but don't rub too hard or the coating will come off too.

I don't think anyone would want an everplay for it's playing qualities.

I know nothing of these new fangled mike holes. Maybe someone else will help.

Yeah I agree with Nut Box (and Eddie), a coated ambassador batter on the bottom of the Toms and the logo side of the bass drum really beefs up the sound compared to the diplomat!

There is a coated double skinned head thats thinner than a PinStripe, Remo make it, but i've frgotten the name (sorry).

They're a little better in my opinion on these drums because they don't lose so much of the top end. The pinstripes are a little too dull in my opinion - but if you like that '70s cardboard box sound go right ahead.

Currently I have Evans Genera G1 on the batter and Remo Ambassador coated underneath (except the snare of course - the thinner the better there!). The Genera is somewhere between a Pinstripe and an ambassador for thickness and sounds lovely.

**TIP - Don't cut a mic hole into a double skinned head like a pinstripe (or dare I say an Evans hydraulic)! They're filled with oil and it's ever so messy!!
