Re: Rogers 1977 Memrilock Big R Silver Metallic 24-13-16-18

I know they did have that in the Tobacco Sunburst. I have seen a picture of one. Those were special order. I remember seeing in a catalogue, I dont remember if it was 81 or 82, but you could special order it wrapped, or natural, or tobacco.

I'd like to get my hands on one, circa 1980, when I bought my kit.

What I would love to find, and it seems to be the rarest of the Big R reissue maple Dynasonics, is a 5x14. Ive seen only two, one was trashed beyond belief, the other was the essense of perfection. That one sold for over a grand. But hopefully, ....... the cash and the drum will meet, someday.

...I really don't think over $1,000 is out of whack any more. How about you?

As I've said elsewhere, I saw this happen in the sports car market in the '80s, with big changes to the same market in the '90s.

Re: Rogers 1977 Memrilock Big R Silver Metallic 24-13-16-18

I went to a wine tasting here locally a couple weeks ago, there were 20 + wineries represented, as well as a number of local restraunts, and three groups playing. One of the groups had drums and that man was sitting behind a World Max Maple small fusion set up, 10-12-14, with 18 BD, ........and a Rogers 8x14 Super Ten in natural maple. During the break I talked to the drummer about his Rogers, and we spent a few minutes discussing Rogers, the 80s reissue Dynasonics and SuperTen Maples. I mentioned my three 80s Maples, and he was like..........oh god, i want one of those.

The 8x14s arent in vogue as much right now, so that price will be off in the future somewhere. But I think it will happen. The 6.5 size is almost there now for that kind of price, especially for one in mint condition. Not quite there but 500-800 is really not at all unreasonable to ask, or even hope for. Those 5 inchers though are rare. I want one. However I think as the market on the 60s wood Dynasonics continues its upward surge, I think the prices on the 80s maples are going to rise right along with them. Right now.......they are excellent buys, sometimes.

What about prices of XP8 drums, in general, as compared to Cleveland and Dayton?

When the word gets around about how great XP8's are they will rise in value...I'm hopin' anyway. I'm restoring a set right now.

I find it fascinating that the word hasn't gotten around yet. Maybe it's because there are fewer of the XP8s ??

Personally, I think most of us really love the old script logo. The Big R just looks garish in comparison. it's not a bad logo, but it's just not as good as the old logo. Also, I think the pre Memriloc hardware eminates a kind of classic understated elegance-- one of functional beauty. It's not that the Memriloc hardware isn't also functionally beautiful. It's just that the newer drums want to yell out their essence. The old drums would rather not say anything--you have to look and feel it for yourself.

I own one set from each era, and the memriloc kit is much easier to tote and set up. But the old kit just glows in a special way. So does the new one. Oh, heck I dunno!

Hey, this brings up a question: are there any production numbers by year and/or color?

Bruces take on this is that the way the badges were applied, and the degree of waste in applying them..... serial numbers alone are not very objective for dating purposes. Shell construction, whether 3 ply or 5 ply or 8 ply, accessories in hardware, for example, memrilock floor tom mounts offer a narrow window for dating 78-79 five ply drums, memrilock tom arm (rounded or flat), color, and a few other things really help to determine year.

My set was purchased new in November 1977. I have the original receipt from Modesto Music in Modesto CA. It came with the set when I bought them in 1979.

So the one thing--the only thing--that could determine exactly when during the 5 or 6 year period an XP8 kit without serial numbers was made would be the original receipt...correct?
