Daisy Brand Snare from NYC Studio
I recently sold a vintage Gretsch kit to a NYC studio, and as the producer was loading the drums in the car, he told me that he had an old wood Rogers drum, and asked if I could fix the strainer. I figured it would be a 60's Powertone, but was surprised when he showed me an old Rogers Daisy Brand drum. He said that it sounds and records great, and that it still gets used all the time. This is a big time studio, several Grammy awards, where groups like Smashmouth and Cindy Blackman record. And this old Rogers drum is still holding it's own...I wouldn't be at all surprised if this can be heard on some top 40's tunes.
Based on Gary N's extraordinary research, I'm thinking the drum is a 1940's Sultan Model. The wood hoops are long gone, replaced with Gretsch die cast rims. The strainer is also long gone, and the drum is drilled for a Ludwig P-85. Holes exist for an internal muffler, also gone. The black lacquer paint looks to be original.
I won't have this for long, so let me know if you want any pictures or details for research purposes.

Gary, no stamp on any part of the snare butt. Great talking with you! I'm thinking the best way to "rescue" the snare will be to try to convince the guy to do a trade...he likes having an old, deep wood snare around, and isn't interested in shopping for another one. I'll see what I can do. More pics on the way when my camera batteries charge.

WOW Gary! I'm amazed I wish I were a real collector like so many here on the ROF.
