My XP8's

Some of you have asked for some before pics of the XP8's I'm restoring. Some idiot covered these beautiful natural maple finish drums with some kind of plastic contact paper. emoticon Now I have the not so fun job of removing all that crap. emoticon I got it all off of the 8x12 and some off of the others but the beautiful aged patina of the natural maple is ruined. So I'm trying to decide whether to refinish or to wrap in WMP (which was never available on XP8's) emoticon Fortunately the shells are in excellent condition otherwise. Great edges and are in perfect round. I have about 80% of the hardware...all the mounts, bd legs, bd claws and t rods, bd lugs and rims for the 8x12. but I still have some bucks to spend on parts.

Where are the drum police when you need them? What are some people thinking when they take nice looking stuff like this and think they're improving it?

I'm guessing sanding the shells down more won't remove the damage . . .

Actually the there are not many scratches on the shells it's just the finish (varnish?) that's ruined. There are some scratches but not bad for the age.

I think I would sand 'em down and re-varnish. If you choose the wmp, I won't be mad at ya. Either way would look great - I'm just thinking th natural finish would be a little nicer.

Hey CC,

Yeah, my first instinct is to refinish them. I've never done a refinish job before so I would probably take it to a furniture refinisher here in Missoula who does nice, nice finish work. I don't know...we'll see.

I refinished a Slingerland single ply maple snare. I sanded it as smooth as possible, final sand was with 320 grit. Then I put about 20 applications of tung oil. It turned out very nice looking.

In this picture it appears lighter than in real life.

Hey Rusty,

What grade of sandpaper did you use for the first sandings? XP8's are very thin plys of rock maple and I don't want to oversand.

Re: My XP8's

I didn't have to use anything "lower" than 150, and that was to remove a couple of deeper scratches. I was careful to feather around the scratch so it wouldn't make a low spot.

When I found this drum (that's right, found in an abandon house on the Oregon coast) it had been painted with what looked like white house paint. I got that off with paint remover then I varnished it. That was about '82 or so. Then 4 years ago I decided to refinish it because the varnish was starting to flake off. I hadn't put many coats of varnish on so it came off fairly easily with just sand paper.

I haven't done a lot of wood work or refinishing but I think you might be OK using fine sand paper without much pressure. I wonder if somewhere or somehow you could find out how thick the plys are. That would give you some idea on how much you could safely sand.

Doing this on 4 shells could turn out to be more work than what the pay off would be. I would be really hesitant about using a power tool. That might go through the ply too easily. Do you know someone who does a lot of refinishing work? That might be a good resource . . .

Like I said in my previous post, it is too bad someone messed with this finish.

Good luck with it. - Rusty

Nice shells ,A lot of work, but they will be worth the effort. Wrap or natural maple?
It would be nice to see that maple brought back to life, but i guess until you,ve taken off all the plastic you don,t know, as it wouldn,t look good unless the maple is in good condition.I,m sure whatever you decide the drums will look and sound great.Keep us posted on the progress Jack and Good luck emoticon
