Holiday Tom Sizes

I actually have two questions, if I may. First - Did Rogers make a 10" Holiday tom during the early 1960's?

Question #2 - can anyone recommendation a good contemporary stand that would comfortably accommodate Swivomatic tom arms? I'm considering putting my hi-tom on its own stand instead of on the kick. Has anyone found a good fit, as it were?

Re: Holiday Tom Sizes

I needed to use something else to mount my toms besides the floor stand that came with my double bass kit. I had already been using two Tama heavy duty cymbal stands, the ones with counter weights at the end of the arms. I found a clamp made by DW that the swivomatic tom holder fits into one end and the other clamped onto the cymbal stand. Using these clamps I can set my kit up with single or double toms and they aren't mounted on the bass. They are very handy and gives me several options on how I set up my kit. If you'd like some pictures I can post them on Monday since I'm working this weekend.

I've never seen a 10", nor can I find one in catalogs or in the Rogers book. The first 10" tom I can find came out in 1973.

I've seen the shorter "L" swivo arm (the kind that came with the double tom mount) used with a 2-way clamp and a heavy cymbal stand.

On Jollity Drum Farm web site there is listed in the lone drums: 3 different Rogers 10x14 toms with the 9/72 badge, a couple of 10x14 '71 Koa Powertones and one 10x14 '70 Holiday.

This is the swivo arm I'm using with the clamp on my kit.

Re: Holiday Tom Sizes

I sure could be wrong, but I think he's asking about a 10" head not a 10" deep shell.

There seems to be confusion how to say/state a drums dimensions. I've always seen it shell depth first, head diameter next, so an 8 X 12 is a 12" head with a 8" deep shell.

So when you say a 10 X 14, I'm thinking 14" head with a 10" deep shell.

Drums were always listed in catalogs as 14X20 bass drum, 8X12 or 9X13 tom and a 14X14 or 16X16 floor tom. The first number was the shell depth, the second number was the head diameter.

What do you think?

Hmm, interesting point. I just assumed he was talking about a 14" diameter head with a 10" deep shell.

I looked at the copy from the Rogers catalog of the kind of kit I have and the sizes are listed as you said, shell x diameter.

Bruce - Thanks for chiming in. You nailed it -- I meant 10" diameter shell, not depth. My apologies to mainedrummer for not being clearer.

And thanks or the hardware suggestions. Since I'm going to use my kit for playing, I was thinking it would save some stress on the kick oif I mount the hi-tom on a separate stand. Ditto with the ride cymbal.

However - I would like to have a correct vintage tom arm to complete the set eventually. But my first priority is to get the kit set up for playing.

Hey Bruce.

Yeah, you've got the line on how to read dimentions, I was in the Sheetmetal trade for 15+ years, and we always read them the way you've explained!

It's the top surface measurement first, then the depth. Hope this was of help?
