Tommy,
I must confess to some sins as of late. I have gone astray and have lusted after Gretsch. Please forgive me fellow Rogers forumites -

I feel better now that I have confessed.

Going astray? Only if you're selling all your drums to buy a collection of vintage skateboards!

Well Mainedrummer,
I guess I am not so bad afterall! I am just clearing out some room to add some other drums.

Here is where I stand, 3 Rogers, 2 Leedys, 1 Ludwig, sets all 22-13-16 with matching snares. 1958-1964.

A Rogers 20-12 with matching snare. 1963

And now 2 Gretsch RB sets a 20-12-14 with matching snare & the newest is an original RB 18-13-16 with a chrome snare. 1964-1966.

I have my heart set on one more purchase.

Basically I want to end up with 8 complete original sets in beautiful finishes that really sound good and look good, along with 4 Cleveland COB Dyna Sonic snares. All the drums sets and snares are from the late 50's to the mid 60's and from each major American drum company (Slingerland goes with the Leedy). The Ludwig set & one of the Rogers kits are used for shows. The others I am keeping in the house.

I don't know what I will do after that but it will be fun to find out.

Wow, Mike! 8 sets, and they all have history with all of the great manufacturers. This is quite the collection, and I think very difficult to achieve. Huge congrats & kudos for pulling it off.

If I wanted to do this, I'd need the money not only for the drums, but for a new house to put them in and a place to play them!! emoticon emoticon

I'm extremely envious of you...

Re: Champagne Buddy Rich Headliner set

Tommy,
I feel very fortunate and blessed to have been able to come across and have these fine drums pass through my hands. I feel that I have been able to lay my hands on some cool history and some great instruments, not to mention I have had the privilege of playing them, even if it is in my basement.

I am trying to solidify what I have and pay for a nice new acquistion while doing so. I spent more money than I ever intended, but I get the sense that at the very least, you can usually recoup your initial investment and have the joy of ownership and use (kind of like a home, except those are depreciating these days!).

It has been a little over a year since I got into serious collecting and I think I hit my apex with that Mardi Gras beavertail kit with the Mardi Gras beavertail Dyna Sonic. Nothing can top that one, especially since the kit is totally local and I know the history and the owners band, who I saw.

The other thing I really have come to enjoy is the cyber friendships that I have found in the vintage drum community. It is a awesome and often overlooked benefit of drum collecting and playing.

I know we all need to have some challenges and goals, mine is to keep looking for that 6 1/2" Mardi Gras Powertone or Dyna Sonic - there has got to be at least one out there somewhere! We'll See! Half of the fun is the quest and the other half is having some people to share the victories with.

This isn't some epitath like I am going to die or quit collecting, but I just had an emotional moment! I AM HAVING FUN!

This one of the most enjoyable hobbies and interests and it is great to share it with you guys and girls who love it too!

Now I think I can start writing my obituary.

Mike, well said, well said!

I can only add that I agree with you totally. Sharing in the victories with our CyberFriends who love to see and hear and post about them has become a passion for me, too.

I'll join you in that epitaph.

Mike: I applaud your variety. There are too many interesting vintage drums from other companies to only collect one brand. It is good to have focus on one particular era and manufacturer, but also enjoy other eras and brands. Just too many great playing drums and not enough time.

Did I see somewhere you had a capri pearl kit you were going to part with? Great finish.
