Re: Definition of swing.
Adius, you hit it right on the head in so many ways. young players often ask me how I get that "in the pocket" grove. There are so many things that you use to get that elusive "pocket" and you mentioned a lot of them.
Some of the things I like to tell these up and coming drummers is exactly what you said...BIG EARS You have to be able to hear every note that's being played and to do that the most important thing in music is FOCUS. You must take your mind off of everything else and focus on what's going on around you musically.
Another important factor is practice, so you can be on auto pilot. If you know the basics well enough your chops will do the rest without you thinking about it and you can concentrate on the band and the music and just let it happen. If you haven't learned the basics well enough for this the music will be stiff and forced sounding (not swinging).
I was a music major in college and so many of the music educators missed these very important points. I had played professionally for over twenty years before I went to college and learned these things from various mentors over the years and from listening to a lot of music and musicians.
I'm glad to see this topic was brought up again because, after all, music is what it's all about, not just instruments.

Great point, Jack. You gotta have the tools. A music major? I am envious. I would have loved to have done that. Your dedication comes through here. Nice going.

Re: Definition of swing.
Hi folks!
New here so hello...
One of the key things to do to learn how to swing (not sure if anyone has said this yet, if so sorry for the repeat info) is to listen, listen, listen... And then copy the licks and add them to your vocabulary. Play along with something you want to learn, it's a lot of fun but can be hard at times.
There are many types of swing...
Here is the Count Basie Orchestra they do a lot of "laying back", you don't have to watch the whole video just a taste:
Count Basie med swing
Here's the same band years after Count Basie passed away, in this Video they're cookin':
Cookin' up some Basie :-)
Check out on YouTube Steve Gadd playing Bebop another style...
I hope this helps alittle
