The 12x8 I ordered in 77 didn't have a badge at all. Also the FT legs were mounted on the wrong end so that badge looks upside down. This just evidence of encroaching sloppiness?

Yes. They were going through some tumult in the mid Fullerton years, including quality issues. This was hammered out during their last gasp as the XP8s were introduced. Between John Cermenaro and Dave Gordon, they tried to get the quality back up--using a granite table to ensure bearing edges were perfect, adding felts under the lugs, among other TLC issues, etc.

John C said that the production manager who preceded him was not a musician, and he thinks that's one reason quality went downhill.

We have seen problems with the placement of the badge. A guy on this forum had a natural maple xp8, and the badge was upside down on the bass drum. I have a Silver metallic XP8, and the Big R tag on the bass is crooked. So this is not un heard of...
