I have an 9 piece double bass set with big R badges, and they have no serial #s or USA, just a plain R. I am hoping they are xp-8 and not cheap imitations, like taiwan. Id sure like to know, than-you, daninflag@[sign in to see URL]

Daninflag, it is likely that these are not XP8s, unfortunately. When the drums were made in USA, they said so, and when they were not, the USA was removed. Also, the orignal bass drum heads had the Rogers logo on both sides with "XP8" under the R, and also "USA."

The Island Music imports were copies of the Rogers drums and were distributed for about a year in the late 1980s. They used the Big R badge without the "USA."

I wont have pics till this weekend, Im hoping they are xp-8s, the bass drums have legs just like my Pearl drum set. They dont look like Rogers legs. I was told the set was 80s. Were Rogers ever made in Taiwan? Thanx! (I cant find usa anywhere) They also have Black Rogers bass drum heads with white Rogers logo, and Rogers black dot heads on the toms.

With non-USA Big R badges, these sound like Island imports, and are unlikely XP8s. They are not covered much in the Rogers book, but the non-USA drums had bass drum spurs that kind of shot down from the side of the shell, instead of fanning out of the lower sides. The black heads are telltale, too. The Island imports were late 80s.

Pictures are needed to be sure.

Hmmm
Just to confuse things then, I've got an xp8 with Big R badges to the right, on all of them with sequential serial numbers, all in clear maple, all from the Fullerton factory.

Probably an early XP8 kit. And a rare thing.

The ones I [sign in to see URL] lables have no serial #'s Rogers USA drums and all face into the drummer and bass heads have XP8 under the R. Clear maple, no rings. Im thinking 78/79 not 80's. Shown as the "studio 10" in the 78 cat.

I think ......unless Im having a huge braindead spat, the no serial number foils were fairly well established in the 1980 year. The late 78-79 drums had numbered badges.

Of course, like with anything........ Rogers never poured it in concrete.

They show the set in the 1977 & 1979 cat, but not in the 80 or 83. They show a similar set but with the heads on the bottoms as a recording set in the 80.

Re: BIG "R" BADGES

I bought my XP8s in 1980. I hand picked them at the Monrovia factory. The factory was only there for a year, and then moved back to Fullerton. My XP8 outfit does not have serial numbers.

There is conjecture that none of the Monrovia drums had serial numbers, but this could not be corroborated by john C in his dialogs, as he joined the company in 1982.

What we do know is this: In 1982, green felts were placed under the Dynasonic wood and brass shelled lugs. In 1983, the green felts were replaced with black felts and were placed under all model Dynas and also on the wood wrapped shells, but not the pearl wrapped ones.
