another q about heads for rogers XP8's
Just acquired a set of XP8's for my son. They came with Evans G1 clears on one side of the toms and Remo Ebony series batter heads, black in color on the other side. Has anybody ever used the remo ebony's on rogers 8ply drums?
In any event, if I were to buy new heads, which I am leaning to, what is your preference for xp8's? I was thinking of using the evans G1's on the reso side, as they seem to be like new. A clear batter side might look most like original, as my XP8 catalogue shows them with clear batter with a big white dot in the middle. Your opinions welcome, thanks.

Re: another q about heads for rogers XP8's
I don't have the XP8's, the script set but I just changed the heads on my toms. I had pinstripes on the Batter side and either black dots or the original, single ply coated on the reso. I now have Evans coated G2s on the Batters and clear G1s on the reso. I'm very happy with the sound now. The pinstripes are OK, a good sound but the note is short lived. With the G2/G1 combo the notes have more sustain and they just ring out. I haven't tried to muffle them yet, I'm just getting used to the open notes. When I say "ring out" I don't mean a dischord ring, I took time to adjust the tension so each head doesn't have any overtones and both the bottom and top heads are very close to the same note. Something I haven't been able to do before is I took a tuner I have to tune my guitar and held it next to the head and struck a note using a soft mallet. The tuner comes back with a note that is steady. Before, with the pinstripes, the needle of the tuner would bounce all over the place, I think because of the overtones coming off the head.
I've learned from experience your drums will sound very different when you're out in the audience than from behind the set. If your drums sound dead (no sustain of the note) all the audience hears is a thud.

The latest incarnation of pinstripe is totally different than earlier ones. They don't give you that dead thud. They have some nice overtones. But basically what you have to do is please yourself. And mainedrummer is right, they sound different out front so have someone play and go out front and listen.
