Re: Computer Stuff

This is important stuff to know and have access to. Some of the biggest problems folks have to deal with is malware that completely hijacks your system. Nothing will open, all web pages you attempt to go to are redirected to a site that says it will remove the "virus" if you send money. I've been very lucky that I've never had one of these on any of my computers, but working in IT at Fairchid Semiconductor I've dealt with it several times, mostly on employee's personal computers. When it is a company computer, we can format it and completely reload it. When you get infected with that stuff you have to be able to access these cleaning sites and tools on a separate computer. When you go to download the tools, be careful what you click on, sometimes you can download stuff you don't want or need - not always the fault of the web masters for those sites. PC World is one that is bad for this. Just scroll down from the first page that shows up and make sure you're just downloading the tool. Uncheck boxes that say do you want this search engine or web browser or a big one, a register cleaner. I'm sure you've all heard about the importance of backing up your files, specially important ones or pictures or your music. There are memory sticks available that can hold up to 32 Gig or external drives for over a terabyte . Just make sure they don't get infected - only attach them when you're moving files to them.

There isn't a punishment for the authors of this junk bad enough in my opinion.

Re: Computer Stuff

I just had to remove one of those "ransom" viruses off of a friend's PC this week. What a pain that was.
Here's another tip - create another admin-level acct on your machine that you don't use, but will allow you to log in to a hijacked machine and run the cleaning tools. Would have saved me hours if there had been one on the PC I just fixed.
btw, MalwareBytes is the best tool out there. If you only d/l one thing, make it that one.

That is a good tip 73Rogers - I have used MalwareBytes many times. Another tool is HiJackThis - but you have to be careful with this one, you can remove stuff that shouldn't be. You should be able to log into your sick machine in safe mode using the admin account and the cleaning tools - things sometimes go a little faster.

Yes, safe mode is always the first step. However the newer ransom viruses block access to safe mode.

btw, another good tool for general cleanup is CCleaner.
It recently became available for OS-X too.
