XP8 Head Choices
Just curious what you guys are currently playing on your XP8s.
I found a couple of related threads through searching on the forum, but those both seem to be at least seven or eight years old. Just figured I'd ask to see if anyone is doing anything differently.
I have an XP8 in Midnight Mist that I bought from the original owner. 22", 12", 13", 16". The BD has both original heads, and I'm pleased with the sound. The toms all have Remo Black Dot Controlled Sound heads. I need to replace the 13 and 16. I like the Remos but I'm very intrigued by some of the descriptions of what the Aquarians do on these drums.
I play in a Grateful Dead/Classic rock band and I love jazz but my jazz chops aren't there yet. Plus I have a mid-sixties Holiday kit I would use for any jazz playing I might do.
I'd love to hear what you all play on your XP8s and why you like them. Thanks!

Re: XP8 Head Choices
I did a different keyword search and found a bunch of head threads. I'm going with a set of pinstripes to start off with.

Re: XP8 Head Choices
I used Pinstripes on my XP8 toms and was very pleased with the sound. It almost seems that combo was meant for each other.
I have switched to clear or coated Emperor batters over clear Ambassadors and like the extra brightness for live use.

Re: XP8 Head Choices
My XP8 set has Evans J1 etched single ply heads on batters, original clear ambassadors on bottoms.

Re: XP8 Head Choices
Wow, Jack! I'll have to try the Evans J1's. I never thought of using them on anything but snares. Hmmmm

Re: XP8 Head Choices
I use Aquarian Super 2 clears on the batter, and Classic Clears on the reso. No muffling.

Re: XP8 Head Choices
Single ply medium weight heads on toms. Either Remo Ambassadors or Evans G1. Batter heads coated most of the time. Reso heads clear. Pretty much the same on snare drums as well. Kick drums either Powerstroke 3 or Aquarian Superkick, with no muffling

Re: XP8 Head Choices
Thanks for all the input. I have a new set of pinstripes on all three toms, with the original clear ambassadors on the reso sides. I love the sound I'm getting from these drums with the pinstripes so far. I'm definitely going to give the Evans J1 a try in the near future as well.
I tune these to 75 on the drum dial, top and bottom. That classic rock, bright thud is the only way I can really describe it. I'm thinking of bring the batters up to 77 or 78 and leaving the resos at 75. Hoping to get a slightly brighter, less thud, sound.

I completed an alternate catchphrase pursuit and found a pack of head strings. I'm running with an arrangement of pinstripes to begin off with.
