Re: Dating Guide

Hello Rogers Lovers,

I have two Big R kits I'm working on. Each kit has one goofy drum slightly eschew from the rest, even though I am sure they came in the set originally. They all have beaver tail lugs and memriloc hardware. Any help dating them would be awesome.

KIT #1
_______________________________________________________________
20" - D725887 - speckled interior
16" - D725747 - speckled interior
12" - D717938 - speckled interior
snare D729193 - Dynasonic

13" - No Srl # - 5 ply, no paint, no reinforcing ring, badge is 180°, half of the lug hex mounting screws are a hair shorter to compensate for thinner shell and the other half of the screws are slightly longer (you can barely tell) hex screws, but with little washers under them.

The memriloc tightening wing screws on this kit are very shiny chrome, an "R" on the flat head, textured ridges on the sides and real sleek look.

KIT #2
_______________________________________________________________
24" - 731325 - speckled interior
14" - 717229 - speckled interior
13" - 717213 - speckled interior

16" - 745008 - Very flat grey paint that looks hand brushed, the shell has a reinforcing ring and the memriloc leg mounting screws with star washers. For some reason this shell seems way more resonant than the 16" floor from the other kit.

The memriloc tightening wing screws on this kit all have the "R" on top in a circle. They seem real grey and old like pot metal or steel.

Thanks in advance for any assistance guys. I've been playing on one of these kits for 25 years and in my youth really gave it hell. I was hoping to supplement pieces from the other kit so that when combined I'll have a really nice set up again.

Re: Dating Guide

Here are some pics of the kits I was describing. One 13" tom clearly is 5 ply without reinforcing rings. I tried to get good shots of interiors so you can see the difference between the speckled grey in most of the shells vs. the flat trunk paint in the single 16" floor tom. The memriloc mounts and beaver tail lugs have been removed for cleaning and possible rewrap of the two drums that had been previously stripped, but they seem to all be pretty typical. I included pics of the two types of wing screws, the shinier of which goes with kit #1. Thanks again for takin' a look everyone/anyone.

The tom with the clear interior and no rerings is an XP8 model, stating in 1979 I believe.

That black 13" drum with the clear insides is a totally different model than the others in the kit. It is an XP8 drum, 8 plies of maple, no rerings, no paint inside, introduced in 1979.

The flat, zinc-coated wingnuts came after the shiny cast wingnuts that are on the drums with the speckled grey insides. Not sure exactly when, but they are later, possibly after the Xp8's came out in 1979.

Any Big R drum will have either a speckled inside (5-ply) or a clear inside (XP8). If it appears to be brush painted, it probably was done by an owner somewhere along the line. If it has no rerings, it might be an XP8 that someone painted to match other drums that are not XP8 drums.

There is an exception to all this: if the drums are from before 1979 (the 5-ply/rerings drums) and have a lacquer finish outside (tobacco sunburst, wine red, natural) they will have natural insides, no grey speckled paint.

Wow thanks for the info guys!
I was just figuring out that for some reason I had a 13" XP8 hiding in my kit. It was bought from a local dealer for a high school jazz band kit in early the early 80s. The dealer must have snuck it in or switched it out for some reason, although the hardware is an exact match w/ the exception of the washers and slightly shorter hex lug screws I mentioned earlier.

I still have a nagging feeling about the black 16" tom with flat grey paint. If the drum has the reinforcing rings (which it does), black wrap and is probably post 1979 then shouldn't it have speckled grey paint? Why would someone paint ugly flat grey over the uniform speckled stuff.

Hmmph.....

If that floor tom has rerings, it cannot be post-79. When the Xp8 drums came along in 1979, the 5-ply drums ceased.

On special order, the factory would supply XP8 drums in the exterior finish you requested to match your existing 5 plies. You would then end up with their more "modern" XP8 drum matching your set on the outside, but the wood ply construction would be completely different. It is my understanding that they painted the inside with trunk paint to match the painted interior of the earlier Fullerton 5 ply drums. The Rogers Book has an anecdote about this, if I remember correctly.

I really appreciate everyone's responses. I think I'm going to conclude that both kits are 5 ply Big Rs probably put out during the last half of that model's run. The floor tom with the flat grey paint must be one of those exceptions and the 13" tom with lacquered interior must have been a special order during XP8 production.

Thanks again...
