Dayton VS Fullerton era

One of these days Im going to buy another set of drums to replace the Dayton-Cleveland set I bought in the 60's. Ive been considering Fullerton era sets due to lower pricing and there are more of them. My question is this: Are they the same quality? Is the Hardware as good? Do the shells split like the early Daytons? And lastly do they sound as good as the Daytons? Thank-you in advance for your input.

Early Fullerton shells were actually Dayton shells moved to the west coast.Hardware stayed the same until the cast collet pieces about 1973 (?). You can find "Fullerton" shells with a Dayton paper badge with the names crossed out and penciled in sometimes.

Other than the collets, was the quality the same after 73? Im thinking as long as I stick with swivo hardware, I should be safe? Thanx George!

Dan,

If you don't mind the Memriloc hardware, the XP8 shells are some of most under rated on the market. I bought a 4 piece shell pack for $250 a while back. Exceptional deal, but still good at twice the price.

Hardware is good and mostly the same until the cast / Memriloc era of lugs. Still excellent pieces just different opinions mostly on quality. Lugs lighter, but no problems with quality.

XP8's are considered the best shells Rogers had and mem-ri-loc hardware is bullet proof. I've playing mine for a few years now and have had no problems at all. Band mates think they are the best sounding drums they've ever heard.

Ive got three XP8 kits now, agree with you on all your positive statements on the memorylock kits. Im thinking of getting a swivo kit, used to have one and now miss it. The reason I sold mine: I didn't like silver sparkle! I know, kinda dumb reason. I was never happy with the look of the set, probably should have just recovered it.

I love my 63 Cleveland's, but if you look at my avatar you'll see mem-ri-loc stands. I never cared for swivo stands. Not enough threads on the wing nut receivers. I've been using the same mem-ri's for about forty years with no issues.
